Anyone else’s gluten-free aisle shrinking at M&S? Ours has massively and yesterday I was surprised to find such a small aisle when I went for the weekly shop yesterday.
It seems it had gone back to a while ago where gluten-free items are dispersed throughout the store.
Pretty depressing! However, the lack of gluten-free aisle did mean I spent more time in the aisles and managed to discover some items that I had no idea were gluten-free!
So today I thought I’d share some of my favourite ‘accidentally gluten-free discoveries’. Before you begin, just a heads up that on my Instagram account I share lots of new free-from products and am giving away tubs of vegan ice cream! So come and enter here.
1. 6. Steamed Prawn Dim Sum
I haven’t had dim sum since going gluten-free so I was ridiculously excited to discover that M&S’s prawn dumplings -in with the takeaway style ready meals section-were actually made with rice flour.
For some reason, they’re not labeled gluten-free but don’t contain any gluten in the ingredients and there’s no factory warning either.
2. Spicy Red Thai Fish Cakes
Thai fish cakes are often not made with gluten but I was still pleasantly surprised to discover these didn’t contain gluten or milk either!
Why not have them as a side dish to one of my gluten-free thai dishes?
3. Chicken Pakoras.
I discovered these last week, along with the bombay potato! M&S has an Indian food section and the pakoras are made with a chickpea flour (As they traditionally are) meaning they don’t contain gluten.
4. Plant Kitchen Not-zarella sticks
There’s quite a few gluten-free Mozarella sticks now but M&S are the only ones I’ve found that are dairy-free too! It’s one of the few Plant Kitchen dishes that are gluten-free as well as being vegan.

5. Bombay Potato
We’re lucky to have a great Indian restaurant that does takeaway around the corner. Their bombay potato is gluten-free but I also buy this one from M&S for when we cook at home.
6. Smoky Paprika Chicken Thigh Skewers
One thing that M&S is great for is BBQ food! These chicken thigh skewers were new and a nice change from burgers. The aioli, which comes in a seperate packet, isn’t dairy-free but I ordered a vegan one from The Vegan Kind so can use that instead.
7. Plant Kitchen Tempura Onion Bhaji’s
Another Plant Kitchen find that doesn’t contain gluten! I’m not a big fan of onion, to be honest but if you are, definitely give these gluten-free onion bhajis a try!
8.Plant Kitchen Sweet Potato and Cashew Curry
Most of the Plant Kitchen currys contain gluten but this one doesn’t!
9. Slow Cooker Range
When the weather gets cooler, the slow cooked range is great and, again, lots of it (such as the lamb and pork) is gluten-free, it’s just not in the gluten-free section!
10. Sticky Chinese Pork Ribs
Surprisingly, these are gluten-free (and labelled as so!) I’ve purchased and I’m trying this evening so will report back!
