Why I started my own podcast

Starting a podcast is one of the best ways to share your voice and create content that can be listened to by people all around the world. Podcasts are not only entertaining but are also educational. With podcasts, you can teach people about anything you want. You can also use podcasts as an avenue to promote your business or product or just to have a conversation! Today I’m going to share my podcast journey!

Starting a podcast is something I’d wanted to do for ages but I’d been put off by the thought of needing to have expensive equipment, microphones, or a place to record with the perfect acoustic pods to ensure your sound quality is top-notch! Don’t get me wrong, you can do all of those things but you don’t need to do any of them to start a podcast!

So I decided to start with what I have and simply recorded via my mobile phone, using the anchor app. You might be wondering what the topic of my podcast is? Well, although I talk a lot about health here on A Balanced Belly, my podcast is actually about my blogging and freelance journey. It’s called The Bloglancer and it’s definitely worth a listen if you’re a small business, blogger or just interested in the writing process.

I created the podcast purely for me: I haven’t invested money in equipment but equally haven’t thought about making money from my podcast either-for me, it’s a chance to reach more people; talk about topics I love and just have some fun. However, it is also a great way to get more visible in general and get your message out there with the world.

My top tips for starting a podcast

There are many ways to start your own podcast, but first, you should have an idea of what you want to talk about. After that, you should think about the equipment needed and how much time it will take for your podcast to be ready for release. I personally recorded all my podcasts in the Anchor app; without needing to use additional equipment like a microphone and I think it works fine. But obviously, if you’re looking for something more professional then it could be worth investing in some equipment. I don’t use a script but having some bullet points and what to cover in each episode can help.

Finally, you should create a plan for how often you will release episodes so that your audience knows when they can expect new content from you. Being consistent is not something I’m brilliant at but it does really help grow an audience.

You’ll also need to create some cover art for your podcast-I made mine (See above) in Canva but you might outsource it to someone on Fiverr or a local graphic design expert. Keep your cover art simple. In both your cover art and intro message, you’ll need to think about exactly what you want to communicate about who you are, what your podcast covers and how it can help people!

If I had the time, I’d love to create a podcast on IBD and chronic illness-it’s definitely next on my to-do list!
