5 ALCOHOL-FREE DRINKS TO TRY IF YOUR BELLY HATES ASAPARTAME’

Aspartame is a very sweet substance used as an artificial sweetener, chiefly in low-calorie products. It is a derivative of aspartic acid and phenylalanine. A study conducted by  Ben Gurion University of the Negev (BGU), in Israel in 2021, suggested that aspartame, along with sucralose and saccharin, can have a significant negative impact on the microbiota of the gut and as a result promotes the development of conditions such as Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD) – (source – here)

For many years, aspartame was touted as the answer to replacing sugar in food and drink, however, extensive research has shown that aspartame is linked to an increase in the development of type 2 diabetes, influencing obesity, glucose, and insulin tolerance. Studies have also noted an increase in premature births and weight gain in infants. Furthermore, the consumption of aspartame has also been linked to mood disorders such as stress and anxiety. It is important to note that whilst we know a lot about the fact that aspartame can impact the gut, it can also cause issues with other important organs and systems within the body.

1. Sweetener-Free Squash

There aren’t many brands that do this but there are a few squash brands out there that do not contain Aspartame. Most of these are more expensive squash brands that use sugar or natural fruit juices, such as Belvoir or Bottlegreen. It’s definitely worth it as a treat.

2. Kombucha

Kombucha is a fermented drink that is made by adding a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast to sparkling teas. It has been claimed to have various health benefits and is great for gut health in particular.

The word “kombucha” comes from the Japanese word for “kelp tea”. The beverage was originally called “tea fungus” or “mushroom tea” in China because it often resembles a mushroom in appearance and texture after fermentation.

The main ingredient of kombucha is black tea, which provides a source of sugar for the fermentation process.

3. Fruit Infused Water

Water is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. There are many ways to make it more appealing, like adding fruit to it. The fruit can be sliced or chopped into small pieces and added to water before drinking. This will add flavor and vitamins while helping you stay hydrated! I often do this with fruits such as ORANGE, LEMON, CUCUMBER or STRAWBERRIES. If you’re worried about fruit sticking to the bottom of the bottle, you can purchase special bottles that keep the two separate.

4. Juicing

Juicing is the process of extracting juice from a fruit or vegetable. Juicing is a great way to get all the nutrients from fruits and vegetables without having to eat them-it also lowers the fiber so it is great if you have digestive issues like me.

Juices are really healthy and can provide many benefits. Some juices can help you lose weight, others can help you detoxify your body, and some juices can even help with your skin.

Juice is really easy to make as well! All you need is a juicer or blender and some fresh fruits or vegetables-my favourites are PINEAPPLE, CUCUMBER, APPLE, STRAWBERRIES, SPINACH and PEAR.

5. Iced Tea

Iced tea is a refreshing beverage that is enjoyed all around the world. It is a great drink to keep you cool during the summer and can be consumed at any time of the day.

  1. I loved this round-up! It’s so helpful to see gut-friendly, alcohol-free drink ideas that skip aspartame — especially for anyone who’s sensitive to artificial sweeteners or just wants something refreshing without digestive discomfort.

Some great options I’d recommend alongside what you’ve shared are cold-pressed sparkling waters with fresh citrus, herbal iced teas (like mint and ginger), or even kombucha (a lightly fermented tea) — they’re all naturally tasty without added sugars or synthetic sweeteners. Sparkling water with a splash of real fruit juice (like cranberry or lemon) is a surprisingly satisfying drink that still stays light and easy on the stomach.

Another good choice is beverages sweetened with natural alternatives like stevia-based sodas (for example Zevia in cola, ginger ale, or lemon-lime flavours) — they offer zero calories and no aspartame if that’s part of what you’re avoiding.

I also find that infusing plain water with fresh herbs (like rosemary or basil) and fruit slices — or brewing iced tea with cinnamon and orange peel — gives a grown-up flavour without anything artificial.
