Since moving back to Birmingham, I’ve been excited to try out all the gluten and dairy free options available. However, beyond the usual restaurant chains, it has been trial and error when trying to find gluten free Birmingham options. Since there’s not much info out there about independent gluten/dairy free dining, I decided to write my own guide to a gluten and dairy free Birmingham in the hope it helps other free from foodies across the city. Let’s get started…
There is a more recent gluten and dairy free Birmingham guide here.
1. Gluten Free Birmingham-Frais Living, Solihull
Based in the suburbs of Birmingham in Shirley, Frais is a healthy eating coffee and juice bar that has a completely gluten free menu (how exciting!) so there’s no cross-contamination issues to worry about. It also offers plenty of dairy free options, a wrap station and their own brew of chai seed coffee. A great choice for healthy free fromers and really reasonably priced. UPDATE: NOW CLOSED
2. Gluten and Free Birmingham Brunch Options-Cherry Red’s, Birmingham
With 2 branches (one in the city centre and in King’s Heath), Cherry Red’s is full of gluten-free options, including a full English breakfast! A great quirky cafe/bar with tasty dishes that cater for almost everyone.
3. Gluten free Birmingham for vegans:Warehouse Cafe Birmingham
Warehouse Cafe is of the popular restaurants in Birmingham’s city centre. Although it’s a purely vegetarian cafe, the menu offers lots of choices for those on a gluten free diet and/or vegans. Their menus are always filled with quirky options making it a refreshing change from the standard gluten free pasta/pizza varieties. Last time I dined there I sampled a gluten-free falafel wrap with beetroot humus and their amazing gluten free vegan chocolate cake (which needs to be tried to be believed!)
4. Gluten free curry Birmingham: Mint Birmingham
If you’re after a gluten free and dairy free curry, you need to head to Mint now. Situated several miles from Birmingham, the huge gluten free menu (the biggest I’ve ever seen!) makes it well worth the journey. Staff are extremely knowledgeable and can also make sure dishes aren’t cooked in dairy (yoghurt marinade being the trickiest part of a dairy free curry). There’s also a healthy section of the menu for those who are trying to eat clean (hint: try the turmeric salmon!)
Gluten and Dairy Free Birmingham-Burgers! Cosy Club
Although this newly established trendy eatery isn’t focused on free-from foods, the gluten free options are actually great. Cosy Club is located in Bennett’s Hill and offers a separate gluten-free menu with lots of yummy treats like gluten free steak burgers! It’s a really lovely place for a date night and the staff were really attentive when I explained my intolerances.
These are just some of the gluten free and dairy free options that Brum has to offer. If you enjoyed this gluten free Birmingham guide make sure you also check out…
The deli in boldmere sells very popular wheat, gluten and dairy free cakes….I know because I make them 3 a week!!!!
Where’s boldmere? I’m writing about birmingham Uk?
Boldmere’s just below Sutton Park!
Veg Out! In Kings Heath also offer gluten free options, and are really helpful – their chef adapted their falafel wrap to a salad for me – and it was the most delicious salad I have ever eaten. Highly recommended.
Ooh not heard of this place, thanks for the tip Kirsty!
Great post! We have veggie, gluten free and vegan requirements in our household and it’s great to see places are really taking it on board. We have visited quite a few of these – along with Loco Lounge in Kings Heath. They have a gluten free and a vegan menu so happy days 🙂
Thank you! I have heard good things about Loco Lounge,I need to give it a try!
