Healthy Travels:Gluten Free Bandung

glutenfreebandung

Going gluten free when traveling in Asia can be really difficult. I have already blogged about Bali, Chiang Mai and Hong Kong today’s turn is Bandung, the capital of the West Java province in Indonesia. Like many countries in South East Asia, the best way to find gluten free food is by exploring already naturally free-from dishes.

Bandung is famous for a wide range of street-food. most of it gluten and dairy free. For those who love food and looking for authentic food of the city, head straight for the street food stalls instead. Here’s some of the best free-from street food dishes to try …….

Sop Kaki Sapi
A  traditional gluten and dairy free dish with a base of meat and potatoes. The Cow’s leg soup is simply fabulous- try to think of it is as a ‘modern bone broth!’. The creamy texture of this dish comes from coconut cream

Savoy Homann Fried Rice
Savoy Homann Fried Rice gets its name from its location at the front of the famed Savoy Homann Hotel. The fried rice is famous for its taste and is a Halal dish that is loved by the locals and the tourists alike. Just check that they don’t use soy sauce- checkout my post on traveling gluten free for advice on carrying an allergy card.

Sate Pak
This is another popular street food destination, and here you can get juicy grilled meat, chicken and mutton. Get your plate loaded with those skewers and dip into a satay peanut sauce. Perfect to grab on the go.

If you are looking for something more upmarket. Checkout Wanderbites; a local food blogger who blogs about the emerging food scene in Bandung. Trip advisor can also be a great resource- locals are often a fountain of knowledge! It’s also worth looking at a more upmarket hotel; since their concierge will be able to communicate with restaurants on your behalf; making sure you allergies or dietary requirements is a good option and avoiding language barrier problems! I’d recommend using travel site Traveloka.com -Highland Resort is one of the best reviewed hotels so it could be a good place to start.
