The sunshine might be around the corner, but for many of us, winter health niggles are very still much an issue. I’ve talked about achy and painful joints before since they’re part and parcel of living with Crohn’s Disease and are also linked to other digestive conditions like Coeliac Disease. However, I’d love to share some specific tips that might help soothe tired and uncomfortable joints if you’re still struggling. Of course, as always, none of the information in this blog should be taken as medical advice so do also talk to your doctor if you’re worried.
Get nutritional deficiencies checked out first
Joint pain can sometimes be a symptom of nutritional deficiencies. For example, achy joints are common for those with low vitamin D levels (more on this here) while muscle spasms and discomfort can be linked to low magnesium levels. Your doctor should be able to test these for you and advise on the best supplements to take.

Take time to pamper yourself
If your joint and muscle aches are worse after exercise or a long day at work, take the time to properly unwind your muscles and joints before bed. A hot bath with magnesium soak or Epsom salts does wonders with helping muscles and joints relax.

When moisturising after a long soak, you could consider a CBD rich skin cream to maximise the impact. Massaging joints and muscles with a decent moisturiser is already great at helping break down and release lactic acid, but some find that skin products infused with CBD oil can be extra soothing.
It’s important to note (in case you’re wondering!) that CBD products of this kind are completely legal in the UK and the compounds don’t give you a ‘high’ in any way! CBD Hemporium’s natural skin cream might help soothe your achy joints and muscles through its high concentration of cannabidiol (CBD) properties.
I’ve been looking into CBD for a while now but haven’t yet tried it myself since I’m pregnant. I know some people who decide to use CBD internally for their IBD. I wouldn’t want to advise on that as there’s not currently much information out there (and I don’t have first-hand experience) but if you are interested in learning more about natural CBD products, skincare products could be a great place to start. If you’re intrigued, read on to the bottom of the post to join in with my latest giveaway to try some products for yourself!

Look at your diet
If your joints are flaring, chances are the only food that could comfort you would be a giant bowl of ice cream! However, in terms of preventative care, there are some foods that might help. As you know, I am a big fan of omega 3 rich foods and supplements to potentially help with inflammation in the digestive system, but they could also help with joint inflammation too.
Quite a few studies have shown fish oil supplements can help with arthritis in particular. I alternate between eating wild fish (this is a bit harder to find, but Waitrose and Sainsbury’s do it) — as wild fish has much higher levels of omega 3 and vitamin D so is worth the higher price tag — and taking a good quality supplement from Bare Biology. Turmeric is another anti-inflammatory I talk a lot about on this blog, and while research is mixed, there’s evidence that consuming it as a supplement could again help with things like joint pain, stiffness and inflammation.

If you’d prefer to avoid supplements, adding turmeric to your diet naturally can’t hurt, but make sure you use a source of fat and a pinch of black pepper to help maximise its absorption. For example, using coconut oil and turmeric in a curry or making my turmeric protein smoothie.
Exercise
Although it’s the last thing we often feel like doing, low-impact exercise is vital if you suffer from joint issues in the long-term. Your doctor will be able to advise how to exercise safely, but activities like swimming are particularly beneficial since they don’t put any pressure on the joints.

I agree with you. Diet is SO important when it comes to managing chronic inflammation. For me, sugar and food dyes are the worst!
I was having a achy joints because of the lake of vitamin D. I consulted my doctor and he suggested me to take CBD as per the prescribed. I started using it and I really felt the difference but along with that proper diet is nessesary.
