How To Start The New Year In The Right Way

It’s that time of year again… love it or hate it, as we go from the end of one year to the beginning of the next, you’re always going to want to put some plans in place for the next twelve months. Of course, making resolutions is one thing, but how can you really start the new year in the right way? Here are some ideas to help you get started.

Look Back

They say you shouldn’t look back because you’re not travelling in that direction, but although the general idea of that saying is a good one, the truth is that looking back at the end of the year can be a great idea. You’ll be able to see all the things you did and whether the outcomes were positive or negative (and for most people, it will be a mixture of the two), you’ll know where you went wrong or right, and you’ll be able to make better choices going forward.

As well as that, you’ll be able to see what you achieved and what’s still left to do, which makes creating your list of resolutions and thinking of what to put on your to-do list for the next twelve months a little easier.

Do Something New

You might be afraid that the next year is going to be the same as the last and that you’re not actually going to be able to get any further ahead. That can be a worry, but if you have a plan and you know what you want to achieve, it does become easier.

It also becomes easier if you start the new year in the way you want to go on and you do something brand new – that will show you that you’re able to break away from the past and your usual routine and that you have the courage to do what you want to do; if you’re looking for motivation, that could be enough. You might book a holiday somewhere you’ve never been before or decide to apply for a new job, or perhaps you’ll get a piercing and buy silver nose studs. As long as whatever you choose is something out of the ordinary and something you want to do for yourself, then it could be exactly the right way to start the new year with a bang.

Create A Vision Board

What is a vision board? It’s really just what it sounds like; it’s a board (either a physical one or a digital one, depending on what works best for you – some people prefer to invest in a corkboard or a whiteboard so it’s right in front of them all the time, helping them stay motivated, but that’s not the right option for everyone, and having a virtual vision board on your phone, for example, can be just as helpful) where you can ‘stick’ quotes, images, and ideas that link to your goals for the year (or even longer-term goals).
The reason that having a vision board is a good idea is that it will keep you focused, as it’s a constant reminder of the things you want to achieve in the next twelve months and beyond, whether that’s saving money, getting healthier, or anything else. Plus, when you’re actively looking for things to add to it, your brain will be set on that path, and whatever you do and whatever choices you make, they’ll all come back to reaching your goals. On top of that, it’s a fun thing to do that will help you feel positive about the year to come.
