During my first trimester of pregnancy, I was too terrified to dye my hair. I know it’s a bit of a myth that hair dye can affect the baby in any way but I still hated the thought of putting lots of chemicals in my head-and my morning sickness probably wouldn’t have coped with the fumes anyway! However, by my 2nd trimester, things were getting a bit desperate!
I have always previously struggled with ammonia-based hair dye (it makes my scalp burn and gives me a bad chest) but just got on with it really. I’d heard pregnancy can make you even more sensitive to ammonia so I decided to try to go down the natural route. At around 15 weeks pregnant, I was kindly sent a box of Naturtint to try (but wasn’t asked to do any kind of review) and have since purchased it again myself from Amazon.
I have found it so useful throughout pregnancy that I thought I’d take the time to type up a blog post with a naturtint review as I wish I’d discovered this from day one (for the sake of my dignity in the early weeks in pregnancy!) and hope it might help those looking for more natural hair dye generally or moms to be who want an alternative to colouring their hair.
Naturtint review: what is Naturtint?
Naturtint is a range of ammonia-free hair dye that uses plant-based ingredients and is suitable for vegans (not to eat obviously! but for those interested in vegan beauty!). The range isn’t completely free of chemicals (as some are needed for the dye to take hold) but it is much more natural and kinder to the environment than most are. There is a range of colours-including root touch, permanent and semi-permanent. I would say that the range of colours are less than you’d expect with most hair dye brands but there’s enough to pick from still and I went for their Dark chestnut brown colour which I’ve used a few times now!
Naturtint review: My thoughts on using naturtint during pregnancy
I’m so impressed with Naturtint. The first thing I noticed was just how incredibly glossy and shiny it left my hair-it looked in incredible condition! The application process was fine, although it does get a little bit messy around the forehead and I needed to scrub away at the stains. However, I had no reaction at all, no tight chest or burning which was a welcome change! The colour was really rich and lasted until my third trimester where I popped another box on a few weeks ago! I would say the dye lasted just as long as more traditional brands of home colourants I’ve tried in the past.
